What is a slot demo, mechanically?

A demo is the same game build that runs for real-money play, loaded with a balance of fun credits instead of real currency. Every reel, every symbol, every bonus round and every underlying probability is identical to what a real-money player at a licensed operator would see. Providers build one game and configure the mode — demo or real — around it; they don't maintain two separate, differently-tuned versions of the same title.

Does the RTP change between demo and real play?

No, and this is worth stating plainly because it's the single most common misconception about demo mode: RTP is a property of the game's maths model, and that model doesn't change based on whether the credits in play are real or not. If a slot's real-money RTP is 96.2%, its demo mode runs on the same 96.2% maths model. There's no separate, deliberately worse demo configuration — the mechanism that would even allow that doesn't exist in how these games are built.

Does volatility change either?

No, for the same reason. Volatility is baked into the same maths model as RTP, and demo mode inherits it unchanged. A high-volatility game feels exactly as quiet-then-spiky in demo mode as it would for real, because it's running the identical probability structure underneath.

So what actually is different?

The only meaningful difference is the currency. Demo mode credits your account with fun credits — a number with no monetary value attached, existing purely so the game has something to display as a balance and something to stake per spin.
